Is it possible to add a matte (non-glossy) finish to a vehicle’s surface in Virtual CRASH or reduce reflectivity?

Yes, this is possible. Below we describe two methods for reducing or removing reflectivity.

Method 1 | VC5 Users (preferred method) | Modify material properties IN MATERIAL MENU

Material properties pre-defined: If the vehicle already has materials defined in the material menu, modify reflectivity. Reflectivity controls the amount of reflection from non-light related objects in the scene (mesh objects, point clouds, images, etc). Note, the reflectivity slider becomes available only when the “reflection” toggle is enabled. This toggle is disabled by default when a new material is created. Below we see the effect of lowering or disabling the reflectivity property. Note the cloud texture map can be turned off by disabling the “use reflection texture” toggle.

Material properties not pre-defined: (1) First switch to elements selection type (Shift+E). (2) Left-click on the elements to be modified. (3) Open the material menu, left-click “new”. Specify the material properties as needed. See the User’s Guide (VC5) for more detail on material settings.

Method 2 | VC5 (legacy method), VC4, and VC3 Users | MATTe FINISH by Modifying material properties IN FACES MENU

For VC4 and VC3 users, first select the vehicle you wish to modify and change your selection type to “elements”, as shown below (note this method can also be used in VC5 but is not preferred).

Now select (left-click) each element of the vehicle’s surface that you would like to have a matte finish. You can hold down control while left-clicking to make multiple selections at a time. In this example we’ll be selecting all the vehicle’s surface elements in order to have a complete matte finish.

Note: Be careful not to drag any elements while you’re making your selections.

After selecting your desired surface elements, open the properties menu on the Left-side control-panel. Expand the faces tab and then change the material selection to “barrier”, as shown below.

The elements previously selected will now have a matte finish:
